Makeup tips and tricks you should know

We may or may not be fond of wearing makeup, but as women, sooner or later we would find the need to do so. It would then help to know at least the basic tips and tricks on proper application, the most important makeup products to stock up on, and how to make cosmetics actually work for you.

This website gave some makeup advice to keep in mind:

1. Use a highlighter concealer to brighten your makeup. It covers critical areas such as shadows under your eyes and fine lines, giving you a natural glow. Apply it directly over, mixed with, or just above your cheek color and around the eyes. You can also use this under your eyebrows and to highlight your nose, to brighten your face. Blend lightly with your fingertips and brush up with powder.

2. The most important makeup products you must have in your daily kikay kit are concealer, eyebrow pencil, mascara, and lip color. “Concealer will make you look less tired, while eyebrow color will give your eyes more character. Mascara will make your eyes appear larger than they are and more open, while lip color accentuates a lovely smile.”

3. To achieve a fresh, no-makeup look, use tinted moisturizing cream, light blush or bronzer on your cheeks, light coating of mascara, and lip gloss.

4. To look pretty and sexy in your makeup, wear only a minimal amount of blush, lip color, and mascara. The natural look is still the best look.

5. For minor mishaps, such as smearing your mascara and applying blush or eye shadow a tad too dark or in the wrong color, use a Q-tip dipped in makeup remover for quick and easy spot removal. “It’s easier to get into a small area without having to start all over and it works great!”

6. Those with Asian skin tone would do well with using foundation and powder with a yellow undertone. “Although many Asian women believe they need to wear pink makeup shades to counteract their natural skin tones, this creates a very unnatural, outdated look. Using yellow-based products do not make Asian women look more yellow; rather they produce a natural, flawless look that is modern and beautiful.”

7. Your makeup has expired “if they smell funny or the formula has separated or dried out. Be especially careful with products used near the eyes as this is a sensitive area.” If you suddenly get irritated by a product you have used faithfully, there may be bacteria in it and must then be discarded.

8. Always use loose powder to finish off your fresh-faced look. After applying makeup (face powder, tinted moisturizer, concealer, neutral eye shadow, mascara, and soft bronzer or neutral blush), polish the look by applying a light coat of loose powder. Finish with a dewy lip gloss. Loose powder covers more evenly than heavier pressed powder, and it does not seep into your pores as easily. You can even apply loose powder several times without it looking cakey, day or night.

9. Take care of your skin, since makeup can never copy your natural beauty. No matter how much makeup you put on, it’s most important for the skin underneath all the gunk to be as flawless as it can be. Be religious about cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting your skin from sun exposure. And always use products that are gentle yet deliver the results they promised. One of the makeup and skin care products you could try is Mary Kay, a US-based brand that’s now available in the Philippines through beauty consultants (not available over the counter). They have different types of moisturizers, sunscreens, and anti-aging products that feel light on your face, give a fresh, matte finish, and gently work to maintain and improve the quality of your skin. And they work well as base for their wide range of makeup products that all enhance, and not cover, your natural beauty.

10. When in doubt, always seek the help of makeup and skin care experts, to guide you in choosing the makeup and skin care products that would work best for you. If you are interested in trying Mary Kay products, they have their own beauty consultants who will give you tips on skin care and makeup application, teach you how to use the products so you can appreciate them better, and patiently answer all your questions.

To know more about Mary Kay, you may contact one of their beauty consultants, Angelita Urbiztondo, through 0928-339-1523 or visit their offices at La Fuerza Building, Pasong Tamo, Makati (2:30PM) or Casa Rafael, Quezon Avenue, Quezon City.
