Build Your Own Eco Wardrobe: Step One, the Knit

by Rickie De Sole

Building a “green” wardrobe can take time; but to amass one, you don’t have to look far. Brands like Loomstate, Bodkin, Stella McCartney, and Hessnatur are being sold alongside their less-eco counterparts at La Garçonne, Barneys New York, and Steven Alan.

For me, it all started with a skirt by Organic by John Patrick. Taken with its A-line shape and chocolate brown color, I was determined to make it my key purchase for fall. But, much to my dismay, it sold out instantaneously at Barneys—my go-to for designer clothing that’s also ecologically responsible. I knew environmentally friendly fashion had become popular, but I had no idea it had reached sold-out status. Luckily, after numerous phone calls (including one to the Organic PR office) I finally tracked the piece down on the Internet. And sure, when it comes to online shopping, the shipping isn’t exactly carbon neutral, but I figure that knowing more about how my clothing is made is at least a step in the right direction towards reducing my footprint.

And thankfully, as my green wardrobe journey continues, I have found more and more designers who manage to be environmentally friendly without compromising personal style. Perhaps John Patrick states it best: “Fashion first”—meaning aesthetics (in addition to global consciousness) should always be a priority. Over the next few weeks, we are going to help you build an eco wardrobe, one sustainable staple at a time—from dresses to cardigans to tanks. This week, we start with the knit.

Marie France: 'Sharon billboards stay'

MANILA, Philippines — Marie France, through its public relations officer, NJ Torres, belied rumors that it has ordered the mega-sized billboards of Megastar Sharon Cuneta removed.

“Not true,” said Torres in an interview with PEP.

Torres refuted a supposed “scoop” published by PEP, Jan. 28 saying, "IPUPULL OUT DAW NG MARIE FRANCE ANG BILLBOARD NI SHARON C DAHIL IBA ANG ITSURA NYA SA NASABING BILLBOARD KEYSA SA TV AT PERSONAL."

"Sa status ni Sharon, I don't think she will also put herself in that position just to sell a lie. Watch and see the new body soon," Torres was quoted as saying in the same article.

Torres added that they have testimonials to prove the same from those involved in the photo shoot including the photographers and the stylist.

The billboard, Torres said, will stay.

Meanwhile, the Ad Standard Council (ASC) denied receiving any complaints concerning the billboard.

A complaint is necessary for the organization to take action with issues concerning advertising content.

“It's not that easy to reverse the decision for an approved material. Kailangan may due process. We receive the complaint. We notify the ad agency and the company. Then, the technical committee will review," ASC’s Raymond Nacino explained in the same article. (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/301339/marie-france-sharon-billboards-stay)

New Aroma Therapy Set

Im so so excited to use my NEW Aroma Therapy Set. OIL BURNER, 3 kinds of Aroma Oil and Tea Light Candle. I bought this set at Dimensione High Street, its very very affordable for only 300++. you'll have this set of relaxation, come on we need to relax naman noh kahit papaano.

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative healing which dates back thousands of years and is becoming increasingly popular today. Based on the use of volatile essential oils extracted from leaves, flowers, fruits, spices, roots and woods, aromatherapy is believed to offer benefits to both physical and psychological well being. In order to use the oils, some type of device is needed to disperse the fragrance. These devices are known as diffusers in general. By far the most popular and readily available types of diffusers are those that use heat, known as aromatherapy burners. There are a few different products which are referred to as aromatherapy burners, including aroma rings, electric burners and tea candle burners.

Candle Burners

The most common aromatherapy burners are those that utilize tea candles. They are also known as aroma lamps and consist of a bottom area which has a flat space to hold the candle and some type of dish directly above to hold water and a few drops of oil. Candle burners work by the principle of vaporization. When the water gets hot enough, the fragrance is diffused along with the water vapor into the surrounding area. These types of burners are available in countless designs to fit any type of interest or style. Cats, dragons, dolphins, floral themes – the list is endless. Some particularly pretty burners have cut outs on the bottom half. Known as the silhouette style, these designs cast shadows on the walls around them. Other burners are structured with the dish hanging from chains, creating an interesting impression. There are even burners available that incorporate a geode as the dish.

The discerning buyer must decide if form or function is most important to them. While many styles are quite beautiful, they are not always practical. A high quality burner should have a large vessel for holding water and a structure that does not put the dish close to the flame. Both of these features will prevent the water from evaporating too quickly, but the majority of burners are not constructed like this. There are a large number of styles available with glass dishes which are usually fairly small. The water and oil will evaporate quickly with these designs and if left unattended the dish will usually crack or become discolored. Some companies sell replacement glass dishes, but you need to make sure you have chosen a design that is compatible with them. Candle burners can also be made from various ceramic materials. These are a bit more resistant to heat damage, but even these can crack if left dry over a flame for an extended period. Soapstone is also becoming a popular material for candle burners and has an even higher tolerance to heat.

Pros: Limitless designs; can be a beautiful piece of home décor; most styles are inexpensive; easy to use.

Cons: Variety of safety concerns regarding candles and heat issues with wax, water and the burner dish; many designs are impractical and need monitoring; all designs not recommended for use more than four hours.

The bottom line consideration in choosing an aromatherapy burner is whether you are going to use it for therapeutic applications or just casual enjoyment. The electric burners are better for extended use and those pursuing alternative healing. Those who are happy to enjoy aromatherapy for shorter periods and do not have concerns about safety issues will be happy with either an aroma ring or adding the artistic touch of a candle burner. "Bulong" Star Cinema

Vhong Navarro is confident that ‘Bulong’ will become a hit.

Vhong Navarro admitted that doing Bulong is really a challenge. “Mahirap kasi gusto namin na ‘pag nagpapatawa ka na, andun pa rin ‘yung takot nila (audience), hindi mawawala ‘yon, hindi bibitaw kasi para ma-prove namin na pwede palang pagsamahin ang horror at comedy,” he explained. Bulong is also Star Cinema’s opening movie for 2011.

The Showtime host was asked if he feels pressured about what the movie’s outcome would be at the box office since Star Cinema’s previous film, Dalaw, was a top grosser. “Hindi naman. Kasi ‘yung Dalaw kasi iba naman ang konsepto ang ginawa ng Star Cinema. Hindi mo naman sila pagkukumpara kasi magkaiba sila.” He continued that he would only feel threatened if Dalaw was in the same genre. “Ang mahirap niyan kung ang Dalaw ay horror comedy, ‘yun! Pwede mong makumpara ‘yun.”

Vhong also added that people have sent him good feedback when they saw the trailer of Bulong.

Bulong, which also stars Angelica Panganiban and Bangs Garcia, will open in theaters on February 2.

Prayers for my Pamangkin "Owie"

I got text message from my older brother informing me that Chloie my pamangkin is now admitted in San Juan De Dios Hospital due to dyspepsia and dehydration because of continuous vomiting. Now she is in IV for fluids and vitamins.

Please Please pray for my pamangkin's fast recovery.

Dyspepsia
Dyspepsia (from the Greek- dys- and pepsis "digestion"), also known as upset stomach or indigestion, refers to a condition of impaired digestion. It is a medical condition characterized by chronic or recurrent pain in the upper abdomen, upper abdominal fullness and feeling full earlier than expected when eating. It can be accompanied by bloating, belching, nausea, or heartburn. Dyspepsia is a common problem, and is frequently due to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or gastritis, but in a small minority may be the first symptom of peptic ulcer disease (an ulcer of the stomach or duodenum) and occasionally cancer. Hence, unexplained newly-onset dyspepsia in people over 55 or the presence of other alarming symptoms may require further investigations. (from wikipedia)

Dehydration
Dehydration (hypohydration) is defined as an excessive loss of body fluid. It is literally the removal of water (Ancient Greek: ὕδωρ hýdōr) from an object, however in physiological terms, it entails a deficiency of fluid within an organism. (from wikipedia)
